Many jurisdictions are looking to improve their permit processing and moving toward electronic submittals. Let's see if we can help each other by discussing what software you use, why you like it, why you don't like it, if you are using it for electronic submittal and plan review and what State you are from since not all software is available around the country.

    Hi!   I love this topic!

Here in El Centro, California we are using MyGov.  We use it across many departments, Building, Code Enforcement, Planning, Engineering, Graffiti Abatement and Parks.  Basically anything that requires tracking and has an address we will track with MyGov.  Previously we had Permits Plus from Accela.  When it was time to update to a web based platform, Accela was a bit out of our budget.   So I was tasked with finding something functional yet affordable.  MyGov has worked fantastic.   We have communication between departments that we really never had before.   The service after the sale is great also, they respond to my questions, comments and requests in a timely manner.  In fact, we are upgrading to the newest version in March.   At this time we do allow online submittals for certain activities, but since our finance department wont allow us to take online payments, I haven't really pursued it.

    Any questions let me know.

Here in Ashland Oregon we use Energov permitting and Munis/Tyler for our financials.  They are pretty streamlined and work effectively to get the job done.  We are all digital and you can attach records to permits pretty seamlessly.  There are some things I miss like when you print out the permits for the customer it does not show square footage added. Its in the permit but just not what we print out for the customer.  This software will eventually be used for a "customer portal" where people can log in and see if they passed inspections etc.  It's very intuitive but we haven't gotten all the updates as of yet.

We are in New Jersey and use Spatial Data Logic's (SDL) GeoClient. It is designed as a whole jurisdiction software. It is web based and does have a desktop application. Almost our entire jurisdiction uses it from the town clerk for OPRA requests, parking permits, our engineering uses for GIS mapping and project reviews, fire prevention for annual registrations and property rental & resale certificates, public works for mapping and citizen complaints, building department for annual ongoing inspections (elevator/backflows/public pools), permitting, online permit submittal and house resales. It also allows us to work with other departments for prior approvals which is a huge benefit vs keeping track on paper. They do also have online plan review capabilities. It has a citizens portal so they can log in and see information about properties, obtain copies of certificates, etc.

Sorry, late to post in here....

In the City of Marietta GA we use Sagesgov.com

It is completely online for submittal, reviews by multiple departments happen simultaneously, and payments can be made.

It is pretty intuitive and easy to use for the younger crowd, but we have a kiosk in our lobby and will assist older or Tech challenged customers to enter their information, give them tips on how to follow up, etc.

Emails are automatically sent through the system to update them when reviews are complete if there are comments to be addressed.

This is really my first system of completely online submittal and I had no problem learning it.  The only issue we seem to have is with the GIS communicating between our city system and Sagesgov.  Also, some customers will create a new application instead of following the email directions on how to resubmit corrections.
